Cora felt herself drifting on top of Aaron. The waves softly lapped over the two of them. All of a sudden, she realized that they had hit land. She didn't know that any time had passed, yet all in the same moment, a year had just flown by. My how time flies when you're having fun.
She took Aaron's hand and yanked herself up. Her legs weren't really cooperating with her today, so she was glad to have the extra help. Cora bent down and splashed a bit of water onto her legs. The she stood up all of the way and started to brush sand off of her stomach. It was amazing how much sand she got on her despite the fact that she was floating in the ocean. I guess that landing on the sand wasn't the best thing to do if she wanted to stay clean.
She slowly walked back to where they had set up camp. Cora then turned to face the ocean, and promptly sat down, while crossing her ankles. It was such a gorgeous day was what she kept saying to herself. She was oh so happy that she had decided to skip school today, and it wasn't like her parents would actually care about it. If they did find out, her dad would give her that stupid lecture about how she needed to live up to the van der Woodsen name and her mother would say that she needed to stay positive in the publics' eyes. Then they would leave her alone, and that would be that.
At the back of her head, Cora couldn't help but think about Gem. She really thought that Gem and Aaron were broken up. She thought that Gem would be happy. She thought wrong. Cora started to formulate a plan on how to make Gem happy again. It wasn't like they were the best of friends, but she still didn't like the fact that she had hurt someone.
Cora laid down and bent her knees, grabbing her sun glasses and smushing them onto her face, thus covering her eyes.

Aaron put on his sunglasses, looking at the beach around him. Everywhere, there were people enjoying themselves, from the family with four screaming kids to the couple their age under an umbrella just like them. It was amazing.
Suddenly, Gem popped into his head, although not of his own volition. Why? He didn't know. But he knew it wasn't he who was thinking of her.
It was Cora.
"What about Gem?" he muttered absenmidedly, almost smacking himself the second after he said it. Still, he'd said it, and there was nothing he could do.
Then came the issue of Cora knowing his secret, and he'd almost giving himself away...he was dangerously close to simply blurting out his secret to his girlfriend and driving her away for good.
But he wouldn't let it slip. Not as long as he could help it.

Cora felt the sun rays beating down on her stomach. It was almost burning her, but it felt really nice. A nice and gentle breeze blew over her stomach, regulating the temperature, in her mind, producing the perfect day for suntanning. Cora then thought, she hated to tan. It really wasn't her. It was something that Gem would do, maybe even Jenny. Just not her. It was one of those girly girl things that preppy girls loved to do in tiny bikinis that barely covered their bodies. It just.wasn't.her.
She thought that she heard Aaron say something. Was it about Gemma?? Cora flipped onto her stomach so that she was looking at Aaron. Her smile fell a bit as she gazed at him. She said, "What did you say?" She was naturally curious. It seemed as though he had said something, and being naturally curious, she wanted to know what it was.
Then a thought popped into her mind. Matt. Would he be ok with this? She hadn't called him since two days ago. She wondered if he was at all curious or worried about her. She tried to convince herself that he really did care about her. That he really did wonder where she was. That maybe her parents cared that she didn't come home last night, but knowing them, they hadn't even noticed. Matt was probably too high to even tell what time it was, not to mention where Cora was. It was really sad thinking about all of this. It was really bringing down her once happy mood.
Cora forced out a smile. This was excatly what she didn't want Aaron to know. In a million years, she wouldn't admit something like this to anyone, and she couldn't even dream about telling Aaron. He would probably get all worked up about it. It would only drive Cora further into her current state. Now that, Matt might find intriguing. Hahaha.
She slowly made her way over to Aaron. Cora gave him a soft kiss, then laid down again.

Suddenly, Aaron was flooded with a whole bunch of...well, let's just say it wasn't anything good. Was it something he said? Did the mere mention of Gem's name spark something in Cora? He didn't know, but he wasn't about to go digging quite yet.
"Oh, nothing," he replied casually, not really caring if she saw through his lie. It wasn't like he'd tell her anyway, not even if she tied him down and tortured him. Well, maybe if she tortured him, he'd consider telling her...
In any case, he didn't want to ruin this perfect day, and he thought of a perfect way to get Cora's mind off of whatever it was on. Of its own accord, a song floated out of his mouth.
"I've never been the kind that you'd call lucky, always stumbling around in circles. But I must've stumbled into something...look at me, am I really alone with you?" As he sang, the melody took on a soft acoustic feel rather than the original feel of the song, which was perfect. It was as if the song was loud enough only for Cora to hear, and no one else. His voice spun an intricate melody that conveyed exactly how he felt about his girlfriend.

Oh nothing. Oh nothing??? Was he serious??? She knew that he had said something. It was going to bug her now. Geeze. She really wanted to know what he had said. Was it really about Gemma? And if it was, why was he thinking about her? Could it be that he was thinking about getting back with Gem? Was he having second thoughts about everything, about him and her? It was a freaky idea, espeically since they had first started the whole boyfriend/girfriend thing, last night.
Cora felt a bit pissed off right now. He had just lied and that was really annoying. She was ok when she was oblivious to the lies, but when she knew that they were lying, it was just plain annoying. They were completely stupid. It was like they actually wanted the person that they were lying to to call them on it or something. How stupid could you get. If you are going to be a compulzive liar, then do it well, or don't do it at all.
Then he started to, sing. Interesting choice of action. She hadn't actually heard him sing outside of the band. Then, he was usually singing in front of guys too, not just a girl. It was an interesting choice. The lyrics were. She didn't know the title though. It was something that she had never heard. Then again, Aaron was pretty much a walking encyclopedia for music.
She drummed her fingers on the towel as she listened to the song. He was so full of it. He was singing this song for a reason, and she could see right through that too. She didn't care though. She was a hopeless romantic, a girl who didn't have much. The corners of her lips turned up as she said, "Well, truthfully, we aren't alone. There is a little kid over there sticking his fingers up his brother's nose."
Cora turned herself completely, so that she was fully facing Aaron. She burried herself into him, and made sure that she was nice and comfy. It had worked. He was so full of it.

It was as if he'd suddenly lost his voice; the song stopped when Cora spoke. Behind his shades, his brow knit and his face morphed into an expression somewhere between annoyed and angry, leaning heavily toward angry. For whatever reason, despite the fact that he knew she was joking, he took that personally. Maybe it was because she'd ruined the only form of expression that was infallible to him; he could say anything he wanted through music.
Suddenly, he felt his demeanor shift from loving and warm to distant and cold. He didn't care that he'd lied to her anymore, either. Especially since he had a sneaking suspicion that she knew he was lying but didn't want to call him on it.
He focused his attention away from Cora to the water, the people, the sky...anything that would get his mind off of this. If this festered in his mind any longer, he'd probably end up ruining the day. Ironic, since he'd been the one to drag her away from everything to come here.

Cora felt estranged. Something in the time continuum had changed. It was Aaron. He was, mad at her. It was hard for her to grasp that concept. She could barely even think it. It was an odd feeling. She had just been ticked off at him and now, he was, ticked off at her. It was a reverse role kind of thing. It was almost like they pulled a freaky Friday moment where they looked into each others' eyes and said 'I wish I were you' at exactly the same time. Only one small thing was missing from that. Cora didn't want to be Aaron, and she was pretty sure that Aaron did not want to be her.
Cora rolled so that she was facing away from Aaron. She pushed her sun glasses to the top of her head and stared out at the beach beyond where they were. She noticed that the two boys were now throwing sand at each other and the mother was holding a crying girl while she was trying to get the boys to stop. It looked really aggravating from her perspective. She made another mental note: Note to self, do not have so many kids that you can never have a moment to yourself.
She tried to think about other things, mainly not the guy who was behind her. Cora got this tingling sensation in her toes, just as she did when she was with Matt. It was when he was sober, which didn't happen often, and he was very conscientious of what was going on around him. It was when he knew exactly where he was, what he was doing there, and who he was with, which was Cora. He never really 'hung out' with anyone else in the family, only Cora. It was only Cora who knew what he was doing and how much trouble he was in and how he was usually mad at her for doing something or another. It was very hard feeling the same as if she were with her brother, when she was really with her boyfriend.
Cora wasn't mad when she stood up. She wasn't frustrated, or aggrivated. She was cool, calm, and collected At least, that was what she told herself. She didn't say anything as she walked away from Aaron. She didn't want to be near him with his 'Matt-like' energy. All she wanted was to get away and hang with her friends. Cora really missed Hali and wanted her to be with her right now. What are girlfriends for after all?
She was now knee deep in water. Cora didn't think about anything as she started to swim. She was swimming away from where they had been sitting. She had no destination in mind. In her mind, the only way that she was coming back to that beach was if someone dragged her back.
The beach in Minuteson could only go so far after all.

Aaron watched as Cora got up and walked away, leaving him to sit alone on the towel. Frustrated, he got up and walked to somewhere further down the beach, somewhere away from her. She didn't want to be around him, so he didn't want to be around her.
As he walked, he kept thinking of everything that had gone on today, even the last couple of days. He'd gone from single and somewhat happy to taken and conflicted. What the hell had happened? He didn't even know.
Suddenly, he spied someone laying on the towel in a skimpy jade-green bikini. Katrina. She was laying in the sun, propping herself up with her forearms folded under her. She looked stunning, even moreso than she had at his party. Not that he remembered what had happened after she left, but there really wasn't anything worth remembering after that, anyway. He decided to bite the bullet and walk over here.
"Well, as I live and breathe, it's Aaron!" she exclaimed with a fake Southern drawl.
"Hey, Trina," he said, sitting down next to her and smiling. Even though she was somewhat of a homewrecker, she was a welcome distraction from everything that was going on.

As Cora swam, she felt her arms get tired. She hadn't even been swimming that long, but yesterday, she had practiced piano for over an hour and that just killed her arms. Thus, her arms were tired. Her legs were tired too, after having dance for a couple hours. Really, it had lasted forever, but who's really counting? Not her, never her, she never complained. Yeah, right.
She decided to turn her sorry self around and head back to shore. So much for not going back to the beach. She sure did have some will. She had folded just like a road map. Wonder how she'll do in the real world. Not much better, I suppose. She could see Aaron on the beach as she swam forcefully to the beach. The current had really picked up and now she was fighting against it to swim back to shore.
Cora had already inhaled salt water, and she was coughing a bit. It had such a nice taste as it burned her throat. The shore was getting closer to where she was. Well, either that or she was making her way closer to the shore. Yes, it had to be one or the other. She had just inhaled another big gulp of salt water. It was really starting to repluse her. Clouds were covering the sun and the air seemed to be a bit cooler. The air sent a chill down her spine which was turning to jelly along with the rest of her body.
Just then, a huge wave crashed over her head, and the water made her do a flip, hitting her head on the ground. She came up to the surface sputtering a bit, but all in all intact. Good for her. She shakily stood up, spoting Aaron on the beach. He had moved since she had last seen him. In an almost drunken appearence, she made her way over to where he was...next to a...girl, and she wasn't a bad looking girl. Cora wondered where he knew her from. She didn't think that he was the type to just go up and talk to a random girl.
She had finally reached him, as she coughed. Cora put her arms around his shoulders, as she steadied herself on him. With another cough, she said, "Hey." Another cough later, she sputtered, "I'm sorry about leaving." She breathed a deep sigh as her eyes finally came into focus. She gave a confused look at the girl as she said, "I'm Cora. Who are you?" to the girl who was on the towel. The pretty girl.

Aaron said nothing as the corner of Katrina's mouth curled into a devilish half-smile.
"I'm Trina," she said, studying Cora from behind her sunglasses. He immediately picked up that Katrina felt threatened by Cora, but only just so much. She knew that she was definitely prettier than Cora, and she figured that Cora knew that too.
"Hey, I've got an idea. Why don't you crazy kids grab your things and park your keesters right over here?" she suggested, smiling broadly now.
Suddenly, time seemed to stop for him. A frisbee that had been flying through the air hung there, people walking down the beach froze in place, and the water stopped moving. Everything but him.
He looked around and saw Cora, frozen like the rest of them. It wasn't until he looked at Katrina that he got a big surprise: she turned her head to look at him.
"So, who's she?" she asked, running her fingers through her hair.
"She's my girlfriend," he said, still trying to process what was going on.
"What happened?" he asked.
"Do you like it?" she said playfully.
"How did you...?" he began, but was cut short by Katrina taking her sunglasses off and looking into his eyes. Even in the bright sunlight, he could clearly see the sheen of red that ran across her irises.
"I'm just like you," she said, putting her sunglasses back on. So, it all made sense now. Why he'd been so happy to see her, why those drinks were more potent than he thought...it all made sense.
"Put it back," he said, focusing his attention back to the frisbee. She sighed and everything began moving again.
"Thanks but no," he said, brushing an errant strand of hair out of his eyes.
"All right then. It was nice to meet you," she said to Cora, and resumed tanning. Aaron got up and quickly took Cora's hand, leading her away from Katrina.
So, he and Katrina had more in common than he'd thought. Now that he knew, he knew that he had to protect Cora in case things went bad, which was where they were more than likely headed.

Trina. Nope, didn't ring a bell. Maybe it was just a random girl that he had just walked up to. That only made Cora wonder why in the world that he would have done that. He could have called so many people and he could have went and talked to someone else. Instead, he went and talked to a girl. A Trina. Interesting. She wasn't mad at him, but she was extremely curious about why he picked her.
Then, she heard the girl say that she had a crazy idea that they come and sit down next to where she was. She even used the word keesters. Who in the world used that word. Apparently, the girl name Trina did. Cora didn't that think that she had heard someone else use that word before. It wasn't even used on the internet, at least, not where she had searched. She rolled her eyes as she thought on. Trina was real funny wasn't she. Oh yeah, a real crackup.
Cora did have to say, however, that she was a bit surprised that Aaron had turned the girl's offer down. He was usually someone who was nice to everyone and usually complied to other people's wishes. Apparently, she still had a lot to learn about him.
She smiled a smile at Trina as she said, "Nice to meet you, too. Maybe the three of us will hang out sometime." Then, she felt Aaron take her hand and lead her away from the blanket. Cora couldn't lie that she was happy to be leaving where they had been. It seemed a little tense. Well, tense wasn't exactly the word. She just couldn't think of what to call the situation. It was just...different.
She sighed as they made their way back to where their towels were. Cora bent down to pick up her sun glasses and she pushed them onto the top of her head. "So," Cora started, "who was that. I mean, I know her name is Trina, but when did you meet here?" She really didn't need that many specifics but according to her own book of standards, she had a right to be curious. It was a girl thing.

Aaron sighed and sat down. What was he going to do? Two parts of his life that he didn't want to intersect had, and there was nothing he could do about it. So, what was he going to do, lie? He'd already lied to Cora earlier, and she'd seen right through it.
"She's a friend of Eric's I met at a party," he said, looking right at her. True, he wasn't lying. He had met her at a party, and she was a friend of Eric's. True, also, that there was a bunch he was leaving out. His voice had a finality to it, like what he said was all there was to know about it. He didn't want her asking any follow-up questions, even though she most likely would, but he'd deal with that if...no, when...it happened.

The thought of what he had said just rolled around in her head. She was friend that he met at a party. A friend of Eric's. Whose party was it anyway? It didn't really matter but the thing was, it was a girl, a pretty girl, who he almost seemed to like. It was almost shocking to her, but then again, Aaron was a boy, and Trina was a girl. It was only natural. Well, at least, in her mind it was natural, whereas some girls direly wanted a boyfriend so they just ended up forcing their tongues down random boys' throats. It did come off as just a little bit desperate.
All of a sudden, Cora felt this overwhelming sense of tiredness. It almost made her feel like she could just curl up in a ball and fall asleep right then and there. Yawning, she gave a nod at Aaron, looking at him face, but not directly into his eyes. it was hard. It almost felt like she couldn't look at him and face him. It was like she was ashamed, but Cora couldn't think of a reason of why she would be like this. then all of a sudden, the feeling passed. A ripple in time. However, she felt more tired than she did before.
She lay down, putting her head on Aaron's lap. Cora gave a small smile as she made herself comfortable. "Nighty, Night," she murmured. She didn't really feel like she could stay awake if it was just her. She was willing to make an adjustment if Aaron could keep her awake.

Aaron knew Cora was falling asleep, and he didn't know whether or not he should do anything to keep her awake. After all, he'd sang for her and she'd interrupted him with what he was sure she thought was a clever comment at the time. It seemed like she wasn't taking this seriously, even though he knew that she was prone to do exactly the opposite. Cora was the type of girl that, when she was little, would fall on the floor in the middle of the kitchen and pretend she was dead just to see what her mom would do. A real drama queen.
As she drifted off, his mind jumped to an alternate reality. One where he could say and do what he wanted without consequence. In this reality, there was only him and Cora walking down a tree-lined path.
"Do you think we rushed things?" he asked.
"Rushed things? What do you mean?" she replied.
"I mean...do you think I might have been too hasty in asking you out?" His eyes traveled downward.
"I dunno. It's only been one day."
"Yeah, but it seems like a lot longer. So much has happened."
"Well, yeah. And it was kind of sudden..." She trailed off.
"So you do think that it was too fast."
"No, actually. Well, kinda. I dunno."
"Well, what?"
"Well...I don't mind being in a relationship with you. I really don't. It's all just been happening too fast."
"Okay..." He didn't get what she meant.
"I think that if things slowed down for a while, it would give me time to sort myself out."
"So you think we should spend some time apart?"
"You know my feelings about that."
"Oh yeah." It was a very complicated situation. Cora liked to be around him, but she needed time apart to sort herself out. It was a dual-edged sword.
His mind snapped back to reality. It seemed like no time had passed.

Cora's mind was fading away, faster and faster. Well, that was what falling asleep did to you. She was falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean and the waves softly lapping against the sandy shore. The feeling of heat warming her up like a blanket in the wintertime. The slight breeze that only made her sleepier. All were things that surrounded her, but things like these weren't what she was concentrating on. In fact, they were one of the last things on the recesses of her brain.
Cora was leaving for London in an hour to go and visit her sister, Nora. She really wanted to say goodbye to Aaron before she left. She would be gone for a while and she couldn't leave without seeing him.
She parked her car by his house, grabbed the gift that she had gotten, and got out slowly. She wasn't really sure if she was happy to be going or sad. Her parents had said it was for her own good, but she wasn't too sure. She didn't do anything really wrong, not like Matt, and yet, she was the one being sent away. Nothing in her life was fair.
She walked over to the garage and saw Aaron standing there, with his arms wrapped around someone. Trina, was it, she remembered from that day on the beach. How could he? They were kissing and he was too busy to even notice that she was standing at the edge of his driveway. Deja vu anyone? A tear rolled down her cheek as she turned to leave. On second thought, she turned back to the sight of Aaron's occupied body wrapped around Trina. Cora walked as close as she dared to the busy couple, who still hadn't noticed her. She placed the gift and card down and wiped away a tear as she made her way quickly back to her car.
She got in to the car and sped home. She hit her hands on the steering wheel as she thought about what she had just seen. It had nearly ripped her heart in half. Glad he could wish her a merry trip off to jolly old England.
Her eyes snapped open. She was still on the beach with Aaron. Relief flooded over her as she realized that Aaron was next to her instead of Trina. She sat up and gave him a hug. She was happy with what she had, and she didn't want him to go away. She gave a small smile and said, "Hi."
