Matt sighed.
"Yeah. I didn't realize it'd get so out of control. But, chaos pretty much follows Cora around wherever she goes." He added the last part with a laugh. It was true.
"So, about this whole "ball" thing...we don't need to go together...I mean, unless you want to." He sounded shy, which wasn't like him at all. He was usually more outgoing than this, but with everything that had been going on in his life, no one could really have blamed him. At least, he hoped they wouldn't.
Then a thought occurred to him...did he like Hali? If the answer turned out to be yes, it would be unfortunate. As much as he'd liked a lot of girls, he'd never pursued a relationship with them simply because he didn't want to be tied down. Nothing had changed, surprisingly enough, so he had to keep his feelings in check. This had to be a strictly friends sort of thing. Unfortunately, he didn't think he had the heart to tell Hali this. For now, he'd wait until the opportunity presented itself. Until that time came, he'd keep his mouth shut.

"Yeah. I didn't realize it'd get so out of control. But, chaos pretty much follows Cora around wherever she goes." Matt laughed at he last part of that. Hali couldn't help but smile along and nod. Cora was pretty much a chaos magnet. The link between all of the people in that room was that they all knew Cora. She was the kind of person that everyone knew, and most people liked. "Yep. A talent of hers." Hali agreed.
"So, about this whole "ball" thing...we don't need to go together...I mean, unless you want to." Matt sounded shy, almost. That wasn't something he usually sounded. Matt was more of the outgoing type. Not nearly as outgoing at Cora, but still, he had a confidence about him.
"Why wouldn't I want to go with you?" Hali asked. "Besides," she joked, feeling a little more comfortable as she realized that there was a kind of sparkle in her eyes that was only there when she was around her friends, those people who she felt comfortable with. "I don't have too many options. And you're definitely my first choice. You're better than someone who I don't know."
Of course, Cora didn't have the idea of Matt and Hali going as a date kind of thing. This was just one friend doing another friend a favor, right? Well, that's all Hali had planned on it being. But, who knew what Cora had actually had in mind. Eventually Matt and Hali would find out. It wasn't like Cora to keep things a secret for too long.

"That's true," Matt said. Hali definitely seemed more comfortable in a classroom alone with Matt than she'd been in the office. Hell, he was more comfortable here than he'd been in the office. He cursed Cora for putting them into that situation.
What was weird was that he was usually comfortable around large groups of people. Well, it was usually in a party setting and he was usually a little more than drunk. Damnit. The fact that he needed alcohol or some form of drug to be truly comfortable in a social setting was one of the things he hated about his former junkie days.
His thoughts immediately turned back to his stash box. Sure, he didn't have any hard drugs, but he probably had enough painkillers in there to knock out a horse.
"Yeah, I'll admit, I'd be a little more than put off if anyone else had asked me," he added. He wanted her to know that, even though they were going as friends, he thought it was a good match simply because they meshed well. It wouldn't be a horrible experience at all. In fact, he was counting on it not being one.

"Yeah, I'll admit, I'd be a little more than put off if anyone else had asked me." Hali smiled a little more and looked at the seat next to Matt's. She walked over and sat down next to him, turning so she was facing him. The classroom was still empty, and the halls were getting quieter every minute.
"Then I guess we're both pretty lucky," Hali said. She thought for a few moments about this whole ball thing. She didn't even know if she wanted to go or not. There wasn't any choice anymore. Her mother had signed her up as soon as she heard about it, and it was going to be one of the many events in Hali's life that her mother got to witness, so Hali didn't have the choice in missing it. It wasn't going to be that bad, anyway.
"Do you think this kind of thing is overrated? The ball, I mean?" Hali found herself asking as she leaned forward and looked past Matt, thinking. Her mother tried her hardest for Hali, and Hali loved her for it, but sometimes she think her mother tried too hard to be a model and a mom. Maybe the two just weren't meant to mix.

"Actually, I do," Matt said, leaning back in his chair. Any social gathering that wasn't a raging party pretty much bored him. Parties were where people were at their most uninhibited, living like there was no tomorrow. That was how he lived for the most part, and he loved to be around people who lived the same way.
That's probably why it'd never work between him and Hali. She was the quiet, reserved type, his complete polar opposite.
"But, what are you going to do?" He was brushing this off very casually, especially since he didn't really care.

"Actually, I do," Hali didn't find that surprising in the slightest. Hali was the kind of person that would be okay if she never went to a party for the rest of her life. She'd pick a good book over a huge house with a hundred sweating teenagers in it. That was what made her and Matt different. Hali wasn't a big fan of parties...or really any event where people could stare at you. And this was the kind of event where people could stare at you. Which automatically made Hali uncomfortable, but her mother wanted her to do this. She could do this for her.
"But, what are you going to do?" Hali blinked and looked at Matt. What was she going to do? "Huh?" Hali asked before she could stop herself. She didn't know what he was asking.

Matt chuckled. Sometimes, he forgot how seriously Hali took things all the time.
"Nothing. Rhetorical question," he said, smiling. She was a strange girl sometimes, and he never quite got a grasp on her. Even after he'd known her for as long as he had, he'd never quite managed to figure her out. Maybe he didn't want to, but maybe he did. Truth be told, that wasn't very high on his list of priorities.
"So what's the big deal about this ball, anyway?" he asked. He really didn't get it.

He chuckled, and Hali blushed a little, glancing away from him for a moment. She didn't want this to turn into an awkward situation. Matt made her comfortable, but even he could mess this up if he didn't do it right. She looked back at Matt a few seconds later and exhaled quietly.
"So what's the big deal about this ball, anyway?" Hali had been trained to answer that question. Before she could stop herself, she found herself saying that definition in a monotone, "These balls are meant to formally introduce young women to society..." She blinked, finally realizing what she was doing and shut her mouth.
It only took her a few seconds to redeem herself. The corner of her mouth curved up as she replied, "It's a rich girl thing. Get all dressed up and pretty. Have everyone look at you. Show off your hair and your date. That whole deal. For me? My mom wanted me to do it." She leaned back and looked over Matt's shoulder. "I hardly ever get to see her, but she's really excited about this. I don't want to let her down."

"Yeah, parents can be a downer sometimes," Matt replied, shrugging. His parents didn't really care about what happened to him. He figured that they'd accepted the fact that he was either beyond fixing or didn't need it a long time ago. However, they lavished Cora with things like this, trying to prepare her for the real world so she could uphold the van der Woodsen's good name.
Then, a better question popped into his mind. Would he have done this if Cora hadn't forced him? It wasn't like that had happened, so there was no reason to even think about it. Or was there? No, not really. In retrospect, it would have been better if things had happened differently from the way they had. He'd certainly have felt a lot less uncomfortable with this whole situation, that's for sure. At least he'd be doing it as a favor to Hali, not his sister. Not that he didn't love his sister enough to do this for her, especially since he was, but still. He knew that Hali wasn't about to ask him on her own, at least, not without a bunch of poking and prodding from his sister.
"At least it'll be fun," he offered, hoping that would alleviate the somber mood that seemed to be hanging in the room.
